What server do I actually need?

Tick the applications you want to run and say how many people will use them. You will get a tier, the reason it was picked, and an honest note about the part nobody can answer from a form.

Your apps choose the processor. Your people choose the disk. We will not tell you that a tier “serves 40 users” — we have not measured that, and neither has anyone else quoting you a number off a web form. What we can do is add up what the software asks for and what your data weighs.

1 · What do you want to run?

Pick the jobs. We will use the application our catalog lists first for each one; you can change it after.

2 · How many people?

This changes the disk, and only the disk. It does not change the processor or the memory — see the note under the answer.

3 · How much data?

This one is a guess, and it is yours to correct. Five gigabytes each is a planning assumption, not something we measured on your data. If you know what your file share weighs today, divide it by your headcount and type that instead — it is the single number that most changes the answer below.

Leave at zero if you are starting fresh. If you are migrating, this is the size of what comes across.

20 TB of outbound transfer a month is included on every tier, in on a 1 Gbit/s port, and anything beyond it is $1 per TB. Inbound is unmetered. Most teams running the applications above do not come close; a public video or media site is the case that does. How that is measured.

What this can’t tell you

How hard your people use the software. Twenty accountants closing a month-end and twenty people who open a chat app twice a day are not the same load, and no form can tell them apart. This adds up what the applications ask for and what your files weigh; it is a starting point for a conversation, not a measurement. Move up a tier and you have headroom; move down and you may not. You can change tier later without rebuilding — ask us.

Where these numbers come from

Every application in our catalog carries two figures: the tier we would put it on, and the tier below which it will not run at all. Both are read off the project’s own published requirements, not off a benchmark of ours — we have not run one, and say so. The heaviest application you pick sets the tier. Everything else is arithmetic you can check: people × gigabytes each, plus what you are bringing with you, plus room to grow.
